Edmonton... Each year, hundreds of Albertans put their lives at risk to save others through volunteer work with search and rescue teams throughout the province. Last year, about 1,200 volunteers gave their time to respond to the more than 250 search and rescue incidents that occurred in Alberta. "During last year's floods, we saw how the skill and dedication of search and rescue personnel can save lives. Search and Rescue Day provides us with an opportunity to recognize the efforts of those committed to this critical work," said Rob Renner, Minister of Municipal Affairs, who is also responsible for Emergency Management Alberta. Also about SAR Day, Michelle sent this link to a mock exercise slideshow. SAVE ON CELL PHONE CHARGES Ian Bullock sent along this tip that could save members money when using cell phones to communicate between searchers on a call out. In Canada, the 511 Roaming Connection can help you save on long distance charges when you use your cellular phone to call another wireless phone. 511 Automatically finds the appropriate Roaming Access Number for you. How it works: ? You must BOTH be wireless customers ? You must BOTH be in your Home Service Area, or ? You must BOTH be in the same calling area outside of your Home Service Area ? Dial 511 SEND. ? You will hear a second dial tone. ? Dial the other wireless user's 10-digit wireless number. ? No long distance charges will apply as long as both of you are in the same calling area. Regular airtime charges will still apply. Note: If your recipient is not in the same calling area, or not in your home service area, the 511 Roaming Connection will still route the call, but long distance charges may apply for your recipient. Fresh from the military, where he commanded troops in Bosnia and Afghanistan, Col. Ellis also commanded the troops sent to help with disasters in Canada - the Pine Lake tornado, Red River floods, and the extensive BC forest fires in 2003. His first task is to hire the other 11 members of the team, which should be complete by mid-September. It's possible SAR teams may find themselves working with Col. Ellis and other government agencies in future. The Environmental Protection Commission made several recommendations for creating an emergency response system in Alberta. 1. Create a provincial agency responsible for emergency, disaster and security issues. 2. Create an institute to support safety, environmental and security functions. 3. Ensure the government agency addresses incidents with a full response, scaling back as warranted. 4. Increase emergency response training and field simulations with government and industry. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SAR IN THE NEWS The Edmonton Journal had an article on July 30th on the experiences of Edmonton area volunteers in incidents as varied as Hurricane Katrina and Project Kare. The item was sent in by Michelle Masche, thanks Shelly, but it is scanned in Adobe format and SARA Happenings cannot reproduce it here. Briefly, the reporter followed ESARA volunteers in a training exercise at the old Greisbach military base and learned about their training and experiences. Then he was impressed when a cell phone alerted members to a Police call about a missing Alzheimer's patient and the team immediately cancelled the practice and took off to help search. Hey - that's what we do. Anyone interested in seeing the whole report can contact Michelle Maschke mdmaschke@yahoo.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOWELL MEMORIAL Another interesting item was sent me by Roger Tetrault roger.tetreault@westfraser.com A photograph again, and Editor must remark here that SARA Happenings is scaled down as a communication that has to fit the email capabilities of 322 subscribers - some of whom would be inconvenienced by the arrival of a 785 Kb picture file. However, please contact Roger to see the photo for yourselves. The memorial is for Tom Howell, who was killed in a quad accident in September 2005 on a mountain in the Team's area. The photo shows the team members sitting behind a cross fabricated, it would appear, from stainless steel and bearing an engraved plaque. The plaque is headed by the words - "Every Mountain Man lives Knowing, one day, the Mountain may win." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SAFETY OFFICER COURSE September 9-10, 2006 Edmonton Registration Deadline: September 1, 2006 Training Grant funded course Host Team: Search & Rescue Dog Association of Alberta To register/details Contact: Mary-Ann Warren mwtracks@netzero.net or 780) 939-2675 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COURSES OFFERED BY SEASAR SEASAR ( South Eastern Alberta Search and Rescue) will be offering a Wilderness First Aid Course on August 25 - 27, 2006. This Training Grant funded course was very informational and is recommended to others. While not intended to make a safety officer out of you in two days, this course gives you the tools for becoming a properly trained safety officer to aid you team. Whether it is for team training or a search incident, having a designated person to look at the hazards out there and keep the team informed of these hazards will help keep your members safe. Donovan Hoggan puts on a entertaining course and did a fine job of getting the message of safety first across to those that attended. The groups need to watch for the package coming registered mail to each and every one of them. There is a bylaw change request that we will need the membership to vote on at this meeting. Groups will need to sign for this package at the local post office. It is time sensitive material, so it must get to the appropriate persons on the teams for consideration and voting purposes. There will be further information in the package regarding the agenda and other activities of the meeting. See the SAR Alberta website for more information, updates and details. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CELEBRATE THE SUCCESS OF BRAZEAU REGIONAL SAR >From Jennifer Smith, Brazeau Regional Search and Rescue, drebertj@telus.net _ this item which reminds us of all the background work our volunteers do to make the work of search and rescue possible. I just would like to give a pat on the back to our group. BRSAR has worked so hard on training and fundraising over the past couple of years. We have purchased a command post and a brand new YELLOW equipment trailer, along with lots of other equipment. The group has been faithfully training 2+ times a month and we are always striving to do our best and keep up our professionalism. Good job BRSAR and keep up the great work. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE UPDATE YOUR CONTACT INFO This is a call for all teams to keep their contact and capability information up to date. Please ensure you inform Brett Wuth wuth@castrov.cuug.ab.ca of every change of your group's information _ he cannot keep the central information current without your help. This editor seconds the call for current contact information. He needs to be able to canvass information for each monthly issue without bothering people who are no longer contacts for their groups. On a recent Edmonton Regional search (for a missing toddler _ Smith area _ that went about 18 hours), they had difficulty calling out some teams (both in time and effort), and they needed to call a lot of teams. The information they had to contact some teams was not up to date. While some teams are very good at keeping up their info, some teams have lapsed on this small but extremely important task. Yet, all teams want those call outs. Edmonton Regional is one that regularly calls other groups in whenever they can. It is important that they have the information needed to contact teams in an efficient and timely manner. It is also equally important to call the resource with the proper equipment and training to get the job done _ hence needing training and equipment information in addition to call out contacts. All teams know and deeply appreciate the work Brett puts into all of the projects he does, but a collaborative effort is needed to maintain this important information. New group information must be shared with Brett/SAR AB too. We thank those teams that do keep up their info. Would it be possible to ensure all info is current as per the SAR AB site, and elaborate on the training and equipment aspects of the teams as well? This is an initiative Edmonton regional has taken on to benefit everyone involved. Jo Janssen < jokena@telusplanet.net Edmonton Regional Search and Rescue -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1-- 800 NUMBER FOR SAR? The following from Cochrane Search And Rescue _ Our area groups talked about using the Star Links Centre to take our calls. Ideally, we would suggest a 1_800 number that could be used throughout Alberta. This would make it easier for any tasking agency to get hold of SAR. If any tasking agency required SAR all they would have to do is call the 1_800 number, ask for a select group or inquire what group is in that region. Cochrane SAR are also coming out with an information page that will be sent to our tasking agencies. This page would tell our tasking agency what each group has to offer. Most agencies know this, however not all tasking agencies know other groups' ablilities. We would like to bring this up at the SAR meeting on Nov 4. If all groups could agree we could look at Telus donating the 1_800 number and the air time. I tried pasting one slide, but that doesn't work. As a sample, the wording on that slide is:- "I Believe . . . that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become." The best I can do, Michelle, is to post your address and ask those interested in seeing it all to mail you for it. Michelle Maschke mdmaschke@yahoo.com While I'm on the topic of files and sizes, I'd like to ask members who send items for SARA Happenings to try to avoid sending me fancy fonts and formatting. If I have to paste your messages into the newsletter it sometimes takes me considerable time to eliminate codes which could turn subsequent items blue, red, underlined, and Lord knows what else. Thanks. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- REQUEST FROM SARVAC Request For Pictures and Information. >From Reese Wolsey Please send pictures for SARVAC and answer the questions as per your region. I know it's not cool, but I have to admit to being thoroughly confused about how many requests are represented. I think one, at least, could be duplicated, but you can contact wiser heads than this one to be set straight. Hey, Michelle mdmaschke@yahoo.com , Edward VanHeeren rockymountainhousesar@yahoo.ca , Reese Wolsey , can you help us out, please? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- REMINDER ABOUT STATISTICAL DATA The following, from Michelle Maschke, is a reminder to the groups that we are still in process of collecting the statistical data on the teams and their activities, as well as membership lists and incidents. This data is important for statistical reference and be assured that all will be kept confidential and not shared for any other reasons than SAR Alberta reference and research. The information may be sent to Regional Directors or to Michelle. Thanks and have a good Christmas. Don't Delay! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- POLITICALLY CORRECT SEASONAL GREETING FROM THE EDITOR Let us all hope for a safe and happy holiday, with good digestion and minimal indulgence in things that are bad for us :-) Happy times with loved ones, and fond remembrances for those far away. Let us hope that no one becomes lost or distressed over the holidays and all the volunteers get to spend the time with their families and friends. A further wish for our armed forces' and for everyone else's health and safety in the war zones around the world, and hope we don't get any new ones in the near future. A greeting for all on duty or on shift over the holidays; police, firefighters, nurses and doctors, and all workers in essential industries. See you all in the New Year. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SARA HAPPENINGS SUBMISSIONS Our regular publication date for mailings of SARA Happenings is the middle of each month.
