Rudy Hane didn't expect to be the subject of a search and rescue search =
when he changed the old emergency beacon from his Cessna and stashed it =
in the trunk of his car. However, at some later time another object in =
the trunk must have hit it and set it off.
The faint distress signal was picked up by an Air Canada jetliner, a =
small plane, and the local control tower. Although there had been no =
notification of a crash two search and rescue teams were dispatched, one =
in the air and one on the ground - as well as a military rescue chopper =
from Trenton.
About one o'clock in the morning the military chopper narrowed the =
search area down to Rudy Hane's driveway and landed nearby. The military =
also called for assistance from the local police. All this resulted in a =
late night crowd on Rudy Hane's doorstep when he answered the knock on =
his door. The questions about the distress signals immediately clued him =
in. Very apologetically he went to the trunk of his car and pulled out =
the offending device.=20
One more Search and Rescue success, but no-body was found - just a red =
face.

<DIV>... but a bit thinner. Sorry about last month, but I had a rather =

<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>From the Globe and Mail ...</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The tragedy that befell Gilles Blackburn and his wife during a =
disastrous=20
backcountry ski venture in the B.C. Interior was their own fault, =
according to=20
those implicated in a lawsuit launched by Mr. Blackburn and his two=20
children.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>In statements of defence filed in B.C. Supreme Court, the Golden=20
search-and-rescue team, the RCMP and the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, =
where=20
the couple had stayed, deny any responsibility for the loss of Mr. =
Blackburn's=20
wife, Marie-Jos=E9e Fortin, who froze to death during the 10-day =
ordeal.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The main thrust of Mr. Blackburn's lawsuit is that officials were =
negligent=20
in failing to launch a search-and-rescue mission despite the spotting of =
several=20
large SOS signs stamped in the snow in the first week after the skiers =
became=20
lost last February, and when Ms. Fortin was still alive...</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>...the RCMP says that the couple's own negligence =93caused or =
contributed to=20
[Ms. Fortin's] death.=94</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The statement refers to: the couple's =93deliberate choice=94 to =
ski outside=20
marked ski runs, their failure to notify anyone of their plans, their =
lack of=20
proper clothing, equipment and means of contacting others, and their =
decision to=20
stray from the SOS signs =93so that they could be rescued in a timely=20
manner.=94</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Similar observations are made in the defence statement filed by the =
Golden=20
and District Search and Rescue Association.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Any injury or damages suffered by Mr. Blackburn and his children =
were=20
caused =93whole or in part by the negligence of Gilles Blackburn and/or =
the=20
deceased,=94 the search and rescue team says.</DIV>
