[SARA-Members] Meeting with the Minister and AEMA

Hi Everyone,

 

Yesterday Don Drebert and I met with the Minister of Municipal Affairs to
discuss, amongst other things the insurance issue and protection for SAR
volunteers. Following that meeting we met with Colin Lloyd the Executive
Director of Operations for AEMA. Both meetings were quite positive and there
was some significant steps made to move the relationship with AEMA and SAR
Alberta forward. 

There is still clarification that needs to happen around the insurance
issue. The RCMP have noted that when tasked on an operation SAR volunteers
as individuals are covered by the Crown for liability. However, there is no
coverage if you are sued for not being tasked. Also, depending on how your
societies bylaws are drafted your association can still be sued as a
separate entity.

 

We did present the Minister with an outline of the SARVAC insurance and the
costs to administer that program if we were to apply it right across
Alberta. Algoma also included the costs for extended disability coverage
