UPCOMING SARSCENE
SARSCENE, now in its 17th year, has grown from a small workshop into a national conference that is gaining international appeal. It is the largest national Search and Rescue (SAR) conference and expo where Canadian and international SAR professionals (Air, Ground, Marine) gather to learn about new equipment and emerging technologies, share best practices, exchange ideas and tackle issues facing SAR.
The National Search and Rescue Secretariat, along with the Newfoundland and Labrador Search and Rescue Association and the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Justice, are working hard as co-hosts to develop an engaging and interactive SAR program under the theme of Strengthening Partnerships.
This year's conference and expo will be in St. John's Newfoundland and Labrador, October 15-18, 2008. Participants will be treated to the province's rich history, unique culture and its' world renowned hospitality and natural beauty. SARSCENE events are being held at the Delta St. John's Hotel and Conference Centre, Sunshine Park and Quidi Vidi Lake.

RED DEER SAR IN TEXAS
On August 28th, 12 members of Red Deer Search and Rescue Technical Rescue Team travelled to College Station, Texas, to train at the world renowned "Disaster City" training facility.
All 12 members received certification as Disaster Technical Search Specialists. This 40 hour course was undertaken over a four day period under the excellent guidance of two search managers of Texas Task Force 1, who immediately headed south at the end of the training to assist with the devastation left behind by Hurricane Gustav.
Training in collapsed buildings and on rubble piles, team members are now qualified in the use of search cameras and seismic and acoustic listening devices.
Disaster City is operated by the Texas Engineering Extension Service of the Texas A&M University System, and trains rescuers from around the world.
