Hi All:
This is our regular mailing intended to improve communication within the
Search and Rescue community in Alberta. It is going to over 300 e-mail
addresses that are listed as the primary contact of SAR Alberta member
groups or which were requested to be added to the mailing list.
Subscription and unsubscription information is at the end of the newsletter.
My apologies for this issue being late – Shaw email is out since yesterday
evening.
SAVE ON CELL PHONE CHARGES
Ian Bullock sent along this tip that could save members money when using
cell phones to communicate between searchers on a call out.
In Canada, the 511 Roaming Connection can help you save on long distance
charges when you use your cellular phone to call another wireless phone. 511
Automatically finds the appropriate Roaming Access Number for you.
How it works:
You must BOTH be wireless customers
You must BOTH be in your Home Service Area,
or
You must BOTH be in the same calling area outside of your Home Service
Area
Dial 511 SEND.
You will hear a second dial tone.
Dial the other wireless user's 10-digit wireless number.
No long distance charges will apply as long as both of you are in the same
calling area. Regular airtime charges will still apply.
Note: If your recipient is not in the same calling area, or not in your home
service area, the 511 Roaming Connection will still route the call, but long
distance charges may apply for your recipient.

RETHINKING SAR AIRCRAFT
Those members with a concern about air searches might want to check out an
item from the Canadian American Strategic Review. With the Canadian Armed
Forces planning to replace its older aircraft in the near future, the
article suggests ways to separate the current requirements and use smaller,
cheaper aircraft for many searches. Read the proposal at
http://www.sfu.ca/casr/mp-sar.htm or through our website at
